GETTING TO VIEQUES

Also known as “La Isla Nena”  ("Little Girl Island") Vieques is part of the small islands and cays that form the archipelago of Puerto Rico and is located just 6 miles south-east from the Puerto Rico mainland. Offering a unique travel experience like no other destination in the Caribbean, Vieques can be reached by plane or ferry. Although there are no direct international flights, there are several airlines that fly to the José Aponte de la Torre Airport in Vieques from different points on the Puerto Rico mainland. Alternatively, there is also a ferry departing from the town of Ceiba, approximately one hour south-east of San Juan.

BY PLANE (CEIBA - VIEQUES)

Vieques Air Link also offers daily flights from the José Aponte de la Torre airport located at the old Roosevelt Roads Naval Base in the town of Ceiba.  Flights from this smaller airport on the east coast are more economical than flights from the airports in the San Juan area, but will require ground transportation to Ceiba, approximately one hour drive from the San Juan area.

Early booking from either departure point is strongly suggested as flights sell out quickly. Remember that booking must be completed through the airline website (as online travel agencies do not publish fares from these carriers). Lastly, remember that given the size of these aircrafts, there is a strict baggage policy. Check with the airline for detailed information on items and weight restrictions.

BY PLANE (SAN JUAN - VIEQUES)

The easiest and most direct way to get to Vieques is to fly. Jumper planes leave from San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín Airport (SJU) and from nearby Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci regional airport (SIG) several times a day.  Airlines offering service to Vieques include Vieques Air Link and Seaborne Airlines.

FERRY

Daily passenger ferries depart from the Ceiba terminal also located at the old Naval Base in the town of Ceiba. Traveling by ferry is a far more economical option than flying but it requires transportation to the east coast town’s old naval base. Advanced tickets can be purchased online on Puertoricoferry.com. Online tickets sell well in advance so it’s important you finalize your travel arrangements early. Passenger ferries take approximately 30 -60 minutes to reach Vieques, where you will dock in the town of Isabel II.

f you choose to take the ferry, keep in mind that car rentals are not allowed on any of the boats. Additionally, you must be a full time Vieques resident, with a valid government issued ID (showing a Vieques address) in order to purchase cargo ferry tickets.

GETTING AROUND IN VIEQUES: CAR RENTALS / TAXI SERVICE

While you don't necessarily need to rent a car to get around while in Vieques, we strongly recommend that you make arrangements for ground transportation in advance to ensure that you'll have access to all the sights and to avoid any last minute issues that could affect your vacation plans.  Also, if you plan on exploring the island in any depth, renting a Jeep or small SUV is the best option by far. Secure your as early as possible as most car rental companies sell out often, specially during the high season (December-May plus holidays and long weekends).
